01 — Who we are

A name that smells of oak shavings & linseed oil.

Chartier began in 1987 in a small barn with two workbenches, one grandfather and an stubborn belief: furniture should outlive its maker. Today our atelier on chartier.name unites three generations — wood selectors, joiners, carvers and interior thinkers.

We do not chase trends. We study light, proportion and the way families really live: morning coffee at a heavy table, kids doing homework on a bench, a grandmother’s chair that still does not wobble after 30 years. That is our brief.

🌳 Forest-first sourcingFSC oak, walnut, ash from managed forests within 600 km.
🔨 No screws where wood can speakMortise-and-tenon, dovetails, wedged joints.
🛢️ Only natural finishHardwax oil, beeswax, soap — safe for kids & bread dough.
♻️ Repair, not replaceFree lifetime tightening + heirloom restoration.

Every piece is signed, dated and recorded in our atelier ledger. If you own a Chartier table, you own page 2147 of our family history — and we will re-oil it for you in 2047 as happily as today.

From rough plank to heirloom in five rituals

Visit us: the smell hits first, then the sound — mallet on chisel, plane whispering. Here is how a Chartier piece is born, and what we can make for you.

01

Selection

We walk the lumber yard, knock on planks, read grain like palm lines. Only 1 in 20 boards becomes Chartier.

02

Resting

Wood sleeps 3–6 months in our loft to 8% humidity. No hurry, no cracks later.

03

Joinery

Hand-cut joints, no metal skeleton. You can disassemble a chair in 2070 and reassemble it.

04

Finish & signature

Three coats of oil, beeswax polish, then branding iron: CHARTIER + year + maker initials.

04 — Heritage

Three generations, one workbench

Chartier is a surname, a promise and a ledger full of sawdust. Our grandfather repaired chairs for neighbours; our parents built farmhouse kitchens; we design calm apartments — same joints, same honesty.

1987 — The barnHenri Chartier opens the shop

Two benches, a second-hand lathe, and a rule: never sell what you would not give your daughter.

2003 — The kitchensMarie & Paul take over

120 farmhouse kitchens in oak and soapstone. Still standing, still oiled every spring.

2019 — The atelierThird generation + designers

We add interior architecture, daylight studies and acoustic wood panels — craft meets science.

2026 — chartier.name todaySlow living for the city

Small collections, made to order, repaired forever. 40% of orders are second pieces from same families.

05 — Journal / News

Notes from the shavings pile

Care guides, wood stories, before-afters and slow-living essays. Click any story to read the full article — each opens on its own page.

The journal is being planed smooth.

Our first stories — how to oil oak, how to choose a table size, walnut vs oak — are on the workbench. Check back soon, or visit the atelier.

How do I care for oiled wood?

Wipe with damp cloth, re-oil thinly once a year. We send a care kit with every table and a video guide. No sanding needed for 5–7 years.

How long does a bespoke order take?

6–8 weeks from approved drawing. Kitchens and libraries 10–14 weeks. We send photos from the bench at week 3 and week 6.

Do you deliver and install?

Yes — two-person white-glove delivery, room-of-choice placement, packaging take-back and first oil check after 12 months.
